Pip makes Dad's day
Pip, the lovable cat from Over the Moon, proved to be a Father’s Day phenomenon on Moonpig.com – with nearly 2,000 cards selling via the website in the run-up to June 20th.
Pip cards are also available through 500 high street outlets, including Fenwicks and all branches of John Lewis, and via the Thorntons website.
An ever-expanding global presence is also boosting Pip’s popularity,
with huge sales being reported in France, Germany, Finland, Italy,
Switzerland, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia. Moonpig has also
selected Pip designs to feature on its new US website.
The success of the cards has led to inevitable interest from the licensing community, and licensing agent KJG Ltd has already signed Bluebird Brands for a range of Pip-branded mugs, coasters, purses, wallets and umbrellas, while Shreds has come on board for a range of products aimed at two- to four-year-olds. Pip-branded notebooks and party invites are also proving to be a big hit after launching through Over the Moon at the end of last year.
Although the Pip cards appeal to a wide demographic, KJG Ltd will be targeting two specific markets for licensed merchandise: young children, as represented by the Shreds deal, and tweens up to students, as represented by the Bluebird Brands range. The designs used will reflect this.
“Pip designs are selling incredibly well across the world, which is creating huge brand awareness,” says Kirsty Guthrie, from KJG Ltd. “Licensees are catching onto this and we are currently in talks with a number of partners who are interested in joining the licensing programme.”
