Sesame Square welcomes new character
Sesame Workshop, the non-profit educational organisation behind Sesame Street kicks off production of Sesame Square, the Nigerian version of Sesame Street, with Zobi.
Sesame Square is slated to premiere later this year and will be hosted by Kami, a girl Muppet who is HIV-positive and has golden fur and a taste for adventure and knowledge. Zobi, a furry blue boy Muppet, was named by the people of NIgeria via a mobile vote, and is energetic and finds ways to make even the simplest task fun and exciting.
Together, Kami and Zobi will welcome viewers to each episode, and will be seen in several segments throughout the half-hour including 'Word of the Day' segments filmed in cities across the country and featuring Nigerian children interacting with the Muppets of Sesame Square.
In response to joining Sesame Square, Zobi said: “I am so happy to be here with my good friend Kami and I can’t wait to meet everyone! I’m so excited about telling all of you all about my favorite things – and especially about my obsession with yams! Isn’t everyone obsessed with yams?” Nigeria will soon have the opportunity to find out all about Zobi and his yam obsession when the programme premieres later this year.
Sesame Square is funded by the American People through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to create the series and supporting outreach materials, and conduct research to evaluate the program’s impact.
