BBC launches Kerwhizz

BBC Magazines is to launch a new four weekly pre-school title based on the popular CBeebies television programme.

The educational, interactive magazine, aimed at inquisitive four- to six-year-olds, specifically supports the National Curriculum. The first issue will go on sale on 30 June 2010.

Each issue will be packed with confidence-building quizzes, puzzles and problem-solving activities that children can achieve on their own. The magazine will also come with a free gift and to encourage them further, correct answers will be rewarded with points and stickers.

Since its launch on CBeebies in November 2008, Kerwhizz has been one of the top ten shows on CBeebies iPlayer and in 2009 Kerwhizz was the 11th highest performing series on the CBeebies channel. The multi-platform CGI quiz programme is the first of its kind in the pre-school television market, and the Kerwhizz quiz and race game on the CBeebies website attracts an average of 250,000 users a week.

Pauline Cooke, publisher, BBC Pre-school Magazines says: “Educating children in an entertaining way can be a struggle, but we believe Kerwhizz magazine will make this easier with its wide range of educational, entertaining and exciting editorial content.”

In the lead up to the launch, sample Kerwhizz magazines will be placed in copies of Toybox magazine and distributed via Early Learning Centres, libraries and selected festivals around the country. The marketing team have also created an online presence by launching an interactive online game linked to the magazine’s content.

Advertisements for Kerwhizz magazine will feature throughout the CBeebies pre-school portfolio while press coverage and awareness of the launch will be generated via PR activities. In-store, Kerwhizz magazines will be displayed in a range of promotional spaces in major retailers. BBC Magazines is also promoting the launch within the independent sector.
