Grandpa wins Welsh BAFTA

The hit CBeebies and BBC 1 programme produced by Adastra Creative has won a Welsh BAFTA for Best Children’s Programme at the 19th Annual BAFTA Cymru 2010 Film, Television and Interactive Media Awards.

The show’s creators have praised the “commitment and talent” of the Welsh team behind success of series.

Accepting the award for Best Children's Programme — the only children’s category of the night — co-creators of the programme and directors of Adastra Creative Mellie Buse and Jan Page dedicated the award to the Welsh talent behind the show’s enormous success, citing in particular “the amazing Welsh production team and leading child actor, Jay Ruckley from Barry”. The pair also thanked Finance Wales for investing in the show ‘which’, they reminded their audience, “is what made it all possible”.

The Welsh BAFTAs recognise and promote excellence in the Welsh media industry and this award is a fitting tribute to the role Welsh expertise has played in bringing the BAFTA Cymru 2010 Best Children's Programme to the screen. That expertise includes the show’s production and design staff, the technical crew at Enfys Studios, the Cardiff-based animation production company Dinamo Productions, which supplied the special effects, and of course local boy Jay Ruckley.

This honour is the latest in a string of successes for Grandpa In my Pocket. The programme was also nominated for the 2009 Children’s BAFTAs in the Pre-School Live Action category. It has now been sold to over 100 territories, and a third series and a Christmas Special have been commissioned by CBeebies. Grandpa is also a hit on DVD: series one volume one was recently released and a second volume is coming out in July.

Mellie Buse, co-creator of the programme and director of Adastra Creative, says: “Winning a major award is always a thrill but for us this is a real home win! It was fantastic to win the award in Wales because of the commitment and talent of the Welsh team. We look forward to working with them again on series three of Grandpa in my Pocket and future projects on which their expertise and enthusiasm will, as ever, be invaluable.”
