Toy Story 3 is box office hit

Initial reports suggest that Toy Story 3 has had the biggest-ever US opening weekend for a Disney Pixar film, raking in $109m (£73m).

Toy Story 3 is only the third animated film to break $100 million in its first weekend, following the success of the second and third Shrek movies.

Pixar's first Toy Story pioneered the art of computer animation and won the admiration of Hollywood. The film was the highest grossing movie of 1995 and was nominated for a slew of awards. In 1999 the sequel was equally successful. Toy Story 2 was the year's biggest box office hit and computer-generated animation soon became the industry standard.

Aside from the 3D technology, it is the poignant nature of the Toy Story 3 story line that sets it apart from the previous films in the series. The film is a sentimental reflection on the process of growing up, featuring the now famous toys - including Woody the cowboy and Buzz Lightyear - worrying about their future as their owner leaves for college."Whether you're a kid or a parent, you always come to a fork in the road where you make the decision of what to do about your toys. Therein lies the appeal of the movie," said Chuck Viane, head of distribution for Disney.

Toy Story 3 opens in the UK on 19 July.
