Mog turns 40

HarperCollins Children’s Books will be celebrating Mog’s 40th anniversary with a special anniversary edition of the original story, Mog the Forgetful Cat, by Judith Kerr.

The book, first published in 1970, will be accompanied by a Mog the Forgetful Cat pop-up edition for autumn 2010. To celebrate the anniversary, there will be a programme of public events and festival appearances, including the Edinburgh and Cheltenham Festivals, alongside PR coverage in national and regional press.

HarperCollins Children’s Books has also secured global licensing rights for film/TV and merchandising for the Mog series of books and Kerr’s bestselling picture book, The Tiger Who Came to Tea. Mel Beer, head of licensing and content development at HarperCollins, is now looking for licensees to develop a range of consumer products targeting nursery/toddlers for toys, arts and crafts, apparel and accessories, as well as greetings, stationery, gifts and homeware with a retro-spin for young females.

Mog the Forgetful Cat began the series of 16 Mog stories that included Mog and the Baby and Mog and Vee Eee Tee. Published by HarperCollins, the stories introduced Mog, a cat of limited intelligence, great humour and a big heart.

Mario Santos, managing director for HarperCollins Children’s Books, said: "Judith Kerr is a truly exceptional talent in the world of picture books. We are extremely proud to have been her publisher from the beginning, enabling her wonderful stories to be enjoyed by generations of children, and we are delighted be celebrating that partnership alongside Mog’s 40th anniversary this year. We have a strong and extensive backlist and now look forward to developing an exciting licensing programme which will see Judith’s charming characters appearing beyond the pages of her many books."
